Queensland bowler Nicola Hancock has used her post-season time off cricket to keep fit, while using a good cause to keep her accountable.
Nicola took part in the Cancer Council’s ‘March Charge’ in which she set a goal of running 100km during March, in an aim to raise awareness and funds for cancer patients, preventative programs and supportive services.
Nicola smashed the goal of 100kms, finishing the month with 132.5kms, all while raising vitally important funds for the Cancer Council.
What hits home for Nicola is the fact that over 160,000 people a year will be told they have cancer – , that was 160,000 reasons for her wanting to use her platform to raise funds and awareness.
After an ad popped up on her Instagram promoting the run, Nicola said she thought it would be a really good opportunity to hold herself accountable through an event, while being very aware that she and many others around her are impacted by cancer.
“So many people are impacted every year and whether that’s directly effected or a loved one or a friend or whatever it may be,” says Nicola.
“It’s such a prevalent part in people’s lives and is happening a lot around us, so I think just supporting in whatever way we can is important, raising money and doing charity work – anything I can do to raise their profile and support research moving forward. And, of course, trying to find a cure. That’s the ultimate goal of every research company’s preventive program, I’ll continue to support and raise awareness for those that are battling or struggling.”
The money raised by Nicola so far has amounted to the equivalent of providing 278 kids with a SunSmart education, or 12 calls to trained cancer professionals, or 3 days of a PHD student’s world-class cancer research.
Congratulations to Nicola on a fantastic achievement, completing the March Charge and raising funds for the Cancer Council.
